Participants can look forward to a very educational, practical and fun experience…. You will learn firsthand what predators look for in victims, how to be aware of your surroundings to discourage an assault and how to quickly escape the most common attacks used by predators! (Without needing years of martial arts training!)

Founding members and Executive Directors, Samuel Scott and Hersh Sandhoo, have over 50 years of combined martial arts training, numerous personal safety certifications and have taught self-defense to thousands of people worldwide, including corporations, law enforcement, private security firms, government agencies and elite military personnel.

What others are saying:

“The instruction is very valuable for all ages, both young and old. I recommend this training which is very easy to learn for our senior citizens too.” – Sara Hamilton

“I have not been in a victim of a crime but I have been in situations where I felt very uncomfortable. Now if presented with the same situations, like being on elevators or stairs, I feel more confident that I could get away and buy myself more time. Thank you sooo much!!” – Arleen Linzau

“I would like to express my appreciation for the self-defense training workshops you hosted for us during our fall retreat. We found your techniques to avoid becoming victims of crime, as well as how to defend ourselves, invaluable. We learned so much and really enjoyed ourselves in the process. Know that you are welcome to return anytime. We are looking forward to it!”

Everyone has experienced the feelings associated with fear. The rapid heart pounding, shortness of breath, tunnel vision and the inability to move when our instincts tell us that we may be in danger.Learn how to turn your fear into fury to help you escape an attack.

Everyone has experienced the feelings associated with fear. The rapid heart pounding, shortness of breath, tunnel vision and the inability to move when our instincts tell us that we may be in danger. These physiological changes are referred to as an adrenal dump.

When we feel like we are being threatened our bodies enter into what is known as a fight or flight response. Instinctively we will react and experience an adrenal dump to allow us a better chance to escape a perceived danger either by confrontation or avoidance. There are two types of adrenaline our bodies release to help in each circumstance.

Flight Adrenaline (norepinephrine) is released to the blood stream under the stress of perceived danger. Such danger may be perceived under a non-dangerous situation, like giving a speech in front of a large crowd, in which you’re just anxious to get things right and not appear foolish. This gives your body strength and speed to flee from real danger.

Fight Adrenaline (epinephrine) is the one that gives your body speed, strength and ability to take more pain than usual while allowing you to focus on an actual threat. Remember that story of the super mother who lifted a car to save her child’s life? That’s epinephrine.

In order to take advantage of fear when in danger of being abducted or abused, you must be familiar with how your body reacts and make sure you allow it to function well by reducing stress, getting enough rest and eating right as these things may cause an adrenal fatigue. By not being fit and healthy, your body may not give you the adrenaline edge during a fight and may lessen your chances of being safe.

Remember in the cases of an attack, you should always fight back! If you prepare and train yourself to turn fear into fury you will greatly increase your chances of escaping an attacker. In order to do so:

In a safe and controlled environment, expose yourself to things that cause you fear. Examine what happens to you internally and physically when your survival instincts sense danger. Try to gain control of that response.

Understand the difference between perceived danger and real danger.

Take care of your body by proper nutrition and exercise.

You must believe that you are a survivor and condition your mind and body to believe it.

Practice awareness skills and physical self-defense training in a reality based training setting.

By going through this process you will also develop more confidence, which manifests itself in your body language. This alone may protect you from many attacks, since predators are always looking for an easy target and someone who appears fearful and compliant.

Thanks to technology anyone can snap a picture or a video of someone else without their knowledge and millions of women are finding themselves victims of voyeurs.

Voyeurism consists of spying on people with indecent intent while they are engaged in what are considered private activities, such as undressing or going to the bathroom. Thanks to technology anyone can snap a picture or a video of someone else without their knowledge and millions of women are finding themselves victims of voyeurs. In fact, thousands of photographs are being posted online with their consent.

In the United States, the Video Voyeurism Prevention Act makes it a misdemeanor for a person having the intent to capture an image of a private area of an individual without their consent under circumstances in which the individual has a sense of privacy. These days almost everyone carries a small camera capable of snapping pictures and recording video regardless no matter where they are.

Voyeurs often get a camera low enough to snap pictures under women’s skirts or dresses by hiding them from view on gym bags or in their own sneakers while walking behind them. Others may place a tiny camera under the table where you are sitting to film you. It is quite scary but you should always be aware of your surroundings and be aware of who’s close to you at all times.

Cameras are very small and can be hidden almost anywhere in bathrooms, showers, hotel rooms and changing rooms in clothing stores. Cameras are now really small and are designed to be difficult to detect but, if you do find you one keep in mind to stay calm, cover the camera’s lens and notify the local police.

Mobile phones now have built-in cameras for snapping pictures and taking videos making it even easier for voyeurs to record you. In the US, a proposed law would require such devices to produce a loud shutter sound when snapping pictures without letting users disable such sound. Some phones already sport this feature and, along with the low, it is aimed at reducing the instances of upskirting, a voyeur practice that has become quite popular, where a video or photograph is taken to expose the up skirt view and private areas of a woman.

Unfortunately, laws like the Video Voyeurisms Prevention Act do not go far enough because they only make it a crime to capture naked or undergarment covered images of a person where the person has an expectation of privacy. For example, a woman standing at an ice cream booth caught a man who had lowered his video camera and was secretly filming up her dress. Believe it or not, he is not guilty of a crime because the law does not apply to filming people in public places, even if it is underneath their clothes.

Here are four steps you can take to avoid being exposed in public:

Be aware of your surroundings

Be conscious of who is behind you and don’t allow anyone to stand too close to you.

On escalators, turn sideways while holding onto the rails to observe those behind you.

While sitting in a public place be conscious of how you position your legs if you are wearing a dress or skirt.

90% of homes in the united states are vulnerable to a practice called bumping, which easily lets a criminal unlock your front door.

Many criminals are now employing a technique called bumping, which essentially lets them access 90% of households in the United States with very little effort and expense. Detailed instructional videos are available on sites like youtube, such as the one below:

The purpose of sharing the information here is that criminals already know and can access these online tutorials, but you are in a much safer situation if you educate yourself properly on the dangers of bumping. Basically a thief, sexual predator or other criminal can simply take an old key, file it down a bit and then hit it into your lock to unlock your front door.

Things you can do to reduce the chance of a break-in:

Buy bump-resistant locks. The two major brands are Medeco and Primus. They cost approximately $150-200 each. Warning: they are not full-proof. There have been reports of these locks being bumped by skilled professionals but it will definitely make it much harder for a criminal to open with this technique.

Subscribe to an alarm system – Nowadays the alarm will sound if your phone wires are cut or you can subscribe to a cellular notification system. You can get free installation specials with monthly service ranging starting at just $40-60 a month. We have used ADT and have been quite happy with them.

Consider adding video surveillance with visible and hidden cameras – the visible cameras near the front and back doors will act as deterrents. You can also buy fake cameras to install if you don’t want to spend the money on real equipment and service. However it is getting much cheaper to install and maintain a system.

Pets, specifically dogs, are great because they will give you ample notice that someone is at the door. While many people try to train their dogs not to bark when the door bell rings or someone arrives at the door, we recommend you let them keep their natural instinct. Their barking is not correlated to aggressive behavior, especially if socialized properly.

Improve the lighting around windows and doors.

Make sure all your windows and doors are locked. A large percent of break-ins happen because someone left a window open at night or forgot to lock the backdoor. This goes for your garage door too! Make sure the door from your house to garage is also locked. It is rather easy to open a garage door.

Tips to help keep your child safe during Halloween.

It is that time of year again! Halloween is a very fun and exciting time for children and adults a like. However as parents, our number one concern should be how to keep our children safe and out of harms way. Statistics from the National Traffic Safety Administration show that nearly 100 deaths among young pedestrians occur on October 31st between the hours of 4pm and 10pm. This is four times higher than any other evening during the year!

There are a number of factors that attribute to these fatal incidents, including:

Most children cross the street at midblock as opposed to the corner or cross walk.

The wearing of black costumes makes it difficult to be seen by drivers.

Wearing certain mask impedes their ability to see on coming vehicles.

Their lack of awareness of their surroundings, due to the excitement of ”trick or treating.”

There is also the potential of being attacked or poisoned by potential predators. This is why it is imperative that your child visit the homes of the people you know personally.

Below is a safety checklist to help ensure your child’s safety during Halloween:

Younger children are accompanied by an adult at all times.

If the child is old enough to go on his own, be sure he or she goes with responsible friends, stays away from homes he’s not familiar with, doesn’t get in a car of a stranger, stays away from dark areas, such as alleys, fields, and wooded areas.

Do not allow them to eat any candy until it is been inspected by you.

Wear light colors and or reflective tape for increased visibility.

Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries.

Avoid cutting across yards and avoid backyards altogether.

Cross the street at the corner or crosswalk.

Follow traffic signals and avoid jaywalking.

Never accept rides from strangers.

Be polite and say “Thank you.”

Avoid banging on doors, use the door bell. If no one answers, leave the property immediately.

Don’t walk on anyone’s flower beds or front yard…use the drive way.

Make sure children have proper identification, including their name, address and phone number.

Don’t carry fake guns, knives or swords that look real. Be sure the swords are flexible and harmless.

Consider using face paint over mask to eliminate visual and hearing obstructions.

Be sure to go to well lit houses and stay on the porch when receiving candy.

Avoid candy that is unwrapped, half wrapped, or has holes in the wrapping.

Avoid wearing long or baggy costumes to reduce the chances of tripping or falling.

Establish a curfew for older children.

Consider having a home party instead of trick or treating.

By following these guidelines, your child should have a safe and exciting experience this Halloween.

According to Brooke Thompson, Operations Manager for the Bethesda Sport and Health Club, “We are very excited to work with EPS Systems and the Women’s Personal Safety Network to bring these personal safety classes to our fitness clubs. Sport and Health takes our members safety very seriously.”

Space is extremely limited and you must purchase your ticket online prior to the event. This event will sell out since Masters Scott and Sandhoo will be personally conducting the women’s personal safety workshop.

FREE Defender Safety Keychain included with event ticket!!

What others are saying about taking this personal safety class:

I was walking in a parking lot late at night when I was grabbed from behind. Instinctively I was able to use the Defender that was attached to my key ring to strike my attacker in the face and was able to run into a store for help. The Defender keychain saved my life! I later found out that my attacker had left his car running and was likely trying to kidnap me. I highly recommend the Defender and Elite Personal Safety Systems to everyone.

Benita Gardner

The Defender is definitely a great tool for women (or anyone). It is manageable and convenient. The techniques taught make me feel more secure going out alone with the possibility that I may have to defend
myself one day.

Valerie Sanders

I found this training assuring and quite helpful. I’m only 5’1 and always out by myself. This training has given me several techniques I can easily use when I am in danger.

Lia Watts

After an hour of practice with the Defender I feel more prepared to defend myself in a crisis. Thank you!

Steffanie Rivers

The instruction is very valuable for all ages, both young and old. I recommend this training which is very easy to learn for our senior citizens too.

Meet the Women's Personal Safety Network founders October 3rd in Dover, DE. We are supporting Witney's Lights efforts to end domestic violence at their 2009 5K Run/Walk. Come join us!

We are proud to support Witney’s Lights efforts to end domestice violence. Domestic violence is one of the most devastating crimes against women:

Battering is the single major cause of injury to women, more frequent than automobile accidents, muggings and rapes combined!

An act of domestic violence occurs every 15 seconds, more frequently than any other US Crime

Of all homicides in the U.S., approximately 40% occur between family members and intimate partners.

One out of three homeless households identified domestic violence as the cause of their homelessness.

Boys from homes where domestic violence is present are:

4 times more likely to abuse in a dating relationship

25 times more likely to commit rape as an adult

6 times more likely to commit suicide

Have a 74% greater chance of committing crimes against others

Have a 24% greater chance of committing a sexual assault as an adult

1000 times more likely to commit violent acts against their own children

Come out Saturday October 3rd in Silver Lake Park (Dover, DE) and support this effort with us. Make sure to stop by our table, Elite Personal Safety Systems, and say hello. In addition to the walk/run there will be lots of fun activities for children, food, a DJ and more!
